New CNC machines anchor Cincinnati State manufacturing lab
Cincinnati State has taken delivery on six new CNC machines that will become the core of a new
manufacturing-oriented lab at the Clifton campus.
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, and, according to Mike DeVore, chair of Cincinnati State’s
mechanical engineering technology program, represents an industry standard for the machine tools that
are found in today’s factories.
“CNC machines are everywhere, and there is a huge demand for technicians who know how to operate,
maintain and trouble-shoot them,” said DeVore, a licensed Professional Engineer who holds a PhD in
mechanical engineering. “Once our students learn how to run these machines, they can go anywhere.”
The CNC equipment was purchased through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to support
manufacturing education at Cincinnati State. According to DeVore, it is the only equipment of its type still
made in the United States.
The lab will be used both for associate degree programs and certificate programs run through Cincinnati
State’s Center for Innovative Technologies and through its Workforce Development Center.
