Cincinnati State will welcome more than 80 new citizens Friday, March 27
Cincinnati State will host one of the region’s largest annual naturalization ceremonies on Friday, March 27.
The ceremony will begin shortly after 1 p.m. in the Conference Center (Main 342-246) at Cincinnati
State’s Clifton campus. Musical entertainment and other preliminary activities will start at approximately 12:45 p.m.
U.S. District Court Judge Michael Barrett is scheduled to swear in approximately 80 new citizens from 38
countries. Cincinnati State President O’dell Moreno Owens – whose grandfather, Antonio Moreno, came
to the United States in the early 1900s from Mexico – will give remarks prior to the ceremony.
Cincinnati State has been hosting a major naturalization ceremony for the past decade. In addition to gifts
and refreshments for new citizens and their families, volunteers from the college are providing day care
services for children, logistical support and some of the pre-event entertainment – Mayesha Amin, a
student from Bangladesh, will perform a dance a traditional dance along with her sister, Raisa.
Reaching beyond American borders is part of the daily life of Cincinnati State. International students
typically account for about 4 percent of the college’s overall enrollment and come from more than 85
nations. In addition to offering English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, the college maintains an
Office of International Affairs, as well as a variety of support services for international students.
