Brewing students won two awards at Bockfest

Cincinnati State Brewing Science students won two awards for their beers during the 27th Annual Bockfest Cincinnati, held Mar. 1-3, 2019.

Student teams (each with 4 members) competed in the Moerlein Brewer’s Challenge.

Brewing Science Program Chair Carla Gesell-Streeter said all competing teams were given the same ingredients (malt and hops) to brew with. This year, all teams had to brew with ale yeast and could add an adjunct sugar.

  • Team Hand Waving (students Nate Graham, Bob Isburgh, David Ovens, and Troy Sparks) took first place in the Brewer’s Challenge with their Belgian Dark Sour Saison, called Beorn.

  • Team Smarty Pints (students James Czar, Bryan Fischer, Brittany Frey, and Brett Hill) won third place with their Belgian Dubbel, named Dubbel Trouble

Previous competition achievements by Brewing Science students include:

  • U.S. Open College Beer Championship – Silver in the Belgian category in 2017, Gold in the Belgian category in 2018

  • Ohio Craft Brewers Cup – Three silver medals in 2018 for Belgian/French Ale, Brown/Dark Ale, and Imperial Stout/Porter
